The History of Welstar finds its basis in the tales of the Creator Races. The Creator Races include the Lithonians and their ancestors, the Dragons, and the Drensieqi, all whom were present on the planet long before the first Elven Armada crashed on Welstar's surface.

Welstar, as it is generally termed by most races (although many refer to the former sun as "Mother" and "The Womb" for reasons that will be clear later), was formed when something known as the Essence embraced and cooled a white dwarf star which was about to explode. This Essence is often theorized as being the reason for magic in the world, sometimes considered the collective subconscious of all deities, and at other times referred to as a god itself, the Lifegiver. The Drensieqi are often credited with being the passing dreams of the Lifegiver as s/he sleeps. Whatever the case, the Essence burrowed its way to the center of the star, and made a home there. It created a climate that was conducive to other life forms, and thus the slow and painful evolutionary battle for racial dominance.

Dinosaurs ruled the land, and mammals were virtually non-existent. It is known, however, that even then the golden-haired, golden-eyed people known as the Drensieqi existed, easily erecting powerful magical and psionic boundaries to protect themselves from any predators. Their civilization was vast and expansive, but they rarely competed with beasts simply because their control over magic was so powerful that they were able to erect magical domes of force, keeping them at bay as well as protecting Drensieqi from any microbes that might harm them. This, while a temporary measure, would prove fatal to the genetic diversity and flexibility of their race, because the artificial environment would no longer provide protection when someone actually passed into their lands from the Beyond.

The Drensieqi did share their magic with their "lizard-brothers", and indeed, that was how the first dragons came to life. Bestowing upon the gigantic dinosaurs intelligence they knew one day they would some day attain, the dragons proved to quickly be far too powerful and dangerous for even the Drensieqi to handle. Not wanting to destroy what they had created, and perhaps out of vanity for their own immortality, they put the dragons to sleep.

In the mean time, evolution moved on heedless of Drensieqi intervention. The dinosaurs became smaller, faster, and more intelligent, eventually becoming the Lithonian race, replete with scales, fangs, a forked tongue, three fingers, a tail, and a superior intelligence. Learning from their previous mistake, the Drensieqi let them be. The fate of the Lithonians would forever change from another source, however.

The Elven Armada, a huge one and the flagship of the fleet at the time, was lead by an individual named Cyrn. His chief transmuter and creator of the dreaded biological war machines, had earned, even then, the nickname of "The Darklord" for his job was a grim task which he took no joy in. And yet, something possessed him to make beast so powerful to be used in the Non-Human war that it ripped a hole in the Armada, enough to cause it to crash into Welstar. The beast known as the Tarrasque had broken free, and its name would strike terror in the hearts of elven nomads for centuries to come. What can you say? They're only human.

This single event would undo what thousands upon thousands of years of evolution had worked so hard to create. The energies from this great magical ship were felt throughout all of Welstar, and it threw the civilizations into chaos. The magic which the Darklord kept so carefully contained went wild, scattering the creator races and de-evolutionizing them. Many Drensieqi were able to shield themselves, but those caught outside the defensive shield were irrevocably irradiated, so much so that their children were hairy, clumsy, unintelligent beings.

Thus, humanity came to be.

Migrating bands began settling the eastern portion of the Welrik continent -- the Aticoff -- thousands of years ago. It is thought that man originated in the valley between the Palim and Aticoff Mountains. With Dethwood to the south (filled with Unseelie), Wereswamp to the west, and the mountains to either side, they had no choice but to settle in the immediate vicinity, for the benefit of the community and protection from the Unseelie. For two centuries, man and Unseelie warred with each other. After a time, the Keystonians moved south to form a principality known as Laneutia. The Druids created a huge, sentient tree that would guard the southernmost lands and protect the fledgling kingdom of Laneut from harm. It was named Ulam.

This massive tree soon became Laneutia's bane. During a great battle with Council of Wyrms, Ancaling, Prince of Dragonkind, dueled with the Heirophant of Druids at the foot of Ulam. The Druids won in the ensuing battle, shirveling Ancaling's wings and hindlegs. Bleeding, Ancaling dove into a nearby river and escaped, but the damage had already been done. Ulam's roots had tasted the blood of evil and it twisted the tree into a malignancy of its former self. The people who moved northwards were cut off from the northern lands. The Keystonians, with the now impassible wood blocking their return to Laneutia, began to settle. Thus Laneutia was isolated from the goings on of the northern kingdoms.

Eventually, Ulam lost its grip on the stretch of woodland that blocked the lower half of the continent from the upper half. Because of this, the Unseelie surged northward and war erupted. They were finally stopped at the Long River. Those humans who were forced northwards founded the Kingdom of Eren.

The Erenians and Keystonians eventually colonized westwards as well, into Wereswamp. Here, they met the benign Kanku, and allied with them to fight the Unseelie in Wereswamp. Once more, the Unseelie cut the men off and nearly exterminated the Kanku. Surrounded by the swamp from all sides, the Keystonians and Erenians found themselves in two valleys, Vossa and Damra. Eventually, the smally valley could not hold the growin gpopulation, and the Keystonians in Vossa battled the Erenians in Damra. Most of the battles took place at the pass between the two valleys, and is now called Death Pass.

The ensuing war brought it to the attention of Athena and Ares, siblings and enemies. Athena took the side of Vossa, Ares allied himself with Damra. Athena won, aided by the Meritosini elves, but Arachne took over upon Ares' departure. She managed to also infiltrate Eren, combining Damra and Eren to create Lothlanis. Thus, the majority of the northern lands, Damra and Eren, were taken over by Arachne.

During this time, the Darklord contacted the Nameless One to increase his own powers. He singlehnadedly managed to actually capture the Nameless One and siphon off some of his power.

For a time, the Darklord had a brief romance with the wind goddess Akadi. She created the Darkwall for him, making the Darklord's domain virtually impenetrable. The dark curtain of roiling black smoke turned all living things into undead. She revoked her affection when she learned of his plans of total world domination.

A knighthood was formed to defeat the Darklord, called the Constellation, which encompassed all the races of Welstar. They only managed to destroy themselves in the process.

In the ensuing war, the Darkwall stopped advancing, but whole nations were already destroyed. Nervcherta, Durnis and Fargeld were obliterated, consumed by the Darkwall.

Taking advantage of the chaos, a large kingdom, called Horat, took over its smaller neighbor to the west, the United Kingdoms of Hurva. Through the assassination of their king, Larsk the II, they managed to infiltrate the government quickly. Only Durid, an island nation, survived.

In an attempt to bring the kingdom under the heel of Horat, Durid fell under magical attack. Max Mordo, one of the most powerful sorcerers on Welstar, transported the island to Wysoom.

Another powerful mage who was on the island at the time, Phost, saved the island by surrounding it in a bubble of air. Now the people of Durantis (formerly Durid) fight other wars, against Kuroa, deep beneath the sea.

The Drensieqi who stayed outside were soon hunted down and killed, as their own children saw them as witches and devils who posed a threat to what little power they had. Most Drensieqi who still survived chose to ignore the humans as they had ignored everything else. Some, like Xavier, chose to lead them.

The Lithonian empire toppled as well, falling into ruin as the next generation was naught but savages, only a shadow of their former glory. Lithonian and Man fought bitterly amongst themselves, using their greatly reduced magical powers haphazardly and without any true understanding of what it was they were doing.

The crash had created a magical rift in the fabric of time and space, enough so that a small contigent of dwarven warriors were able to penetrate the magical veil between worlds. The colony that would later establish itself as the warriors of Jreast would not last.

In the midst of all this, the Dragons slowly awoke.

The Lithonians would have easily slaughtered humanity into extinction, if Xavier had not left his Drensieqi home to lead them. Xavier was the original King of the Drensieq lands, but it meant little to him, as their culture became a decadent, hedonistic society. Xavier, in several disguises and over several centuries, built up the Keystone Empire himself. Keystone City and the surrounding kingdom was born, as it was known as the Keystone of the world, for it was there upon which Xavier decided all of humanity would learn from. Disguising himself magically as a new king every so many decades, Xavier led humanity out of the Dark Ages, leaving the Lithonians to fight amongst themselves in the Swamplands.

But what of the elves? The magical effects of their crash changed them as well, scattering them to the four winds. Those who landed in escape pods in the glaciers became the Glenwei, but most elected to stay in the Meritoson Desert, a desert created by the crashing of their great ship. There, they would wander for years, slowing being fed upon by the Tarrasque and feeling that it was their fate and punishment. The elven races would degenerate further (as the Sephrani tell it) or resiliently evolutionize (as the Jalanoi tell it), into two distinct races: the small, faire-skinned Sephrani, and the tall, inherently psionic Jalanoi. These racial differences would cause wars that would allow for little exploration of the land beyond the Meritoson Desert. Outsiders would collectively call all such elves from this desert clime, the Meritoson Elves.

Two individuals, however, crashed not into a glacial waste, not into the mountains, but into the Well itself, what would be named from there on, the Well of Stars, the hole into which the Essence burrowed and hid. Cyrn and the Darklord both emerged with the powers of gods. Cyrn would not attain godly status until long after the Darklord's empire had already been established, for the elven peoples were not particularly receptive to his return, and even blamed their fate on him.

The Darklord and Cyrn argued, though it is not known what was said. They went their own ways, but that argument would prove to be the start of a feud that would spark several wars and cost the lives of millions. Some say it was over the fate of the elven people, but the answers are lost in time.

The Darklord continued his work, realizing now the uncontrollable power of life, he invented the art of necromancy. Unhindered and finding himself immortal, the Darklord set into motion a long range plan to dominate and control the planet that had given him life.

He found that man was a useful tool. But where Xavier sought to teach humanity and enlighten him, the Darklord tempted them with powerful gifts. It was not long before the two crossed paths, and the Darklord treated him no differently. When Xavier refused and repelled him through magical force, the two became sworn enemies ever after.

Springing up independently and without assistance from Xavier, the polises of Athenor grew into a series of City States that would have rivaled Keystone in its heyday had it not been for the Darklord spreading a plague that wiped them out. The entire Aticoffian coast, to be saved from its fate as undead servants of the Darklord, was flooded by the Athenian gods. It was a stalemate in which humanity suffered greatly.

Its sister nation fared better only because of Xavier's vigilance. The Darklord, in the mean time, took the planet hostage purposely driving to the brink of extinction the race of unicorns, and then threatening to slaughter the last five should the planet not comply to his wishes. Helpless, Welstar allowed the Darklord to create the Darkwall - a roiling, venomous mist of inky darkness that sucked the life of all within it.

The Darklord's attempts to harm Xavier met with success. He trapped the soul of a mortal woman who Xavier loved, and stole her child. The final straw came about when the Darklord managed to steal the Five Crowns of Rule, items which Xavier had intended to give to humanity to create four other kingdoms with Keystone at its head. Xavier was forced to step down from his long line of puppet kings, which the Darklord interpreted as a sign of weakness, when it was in actuality Xavier merely regrouping his forces.

The Dragons, feeling no kinship towards their lesser Lithonian brethren, scattered without any leadership to guide them. One dragon, claiming himself as king, called himself Wetzylbaum. Through the use of an ancient Drensieqi device, he magically coerced an army of dragons into service and forced cooperation, and then used his own charisma and presence to keep them together long afterwards. Wetzylbaum's people would be present at the final Darkwar.

The Drensieqi kingdom retreated further and further into secrecy as the world's events moved on heedless of their wishes. When a human penetrated their magical barriers, he saved them from a life of isolation and sloth, but doomed them by carrying in a disease which their weak constitutions had never been exposed to. The common cold.

Falling ill and dying off rapidly without the means to reproduce, the Drensieqi decided to move their people into another dimension. The effort taxed them greatly, and they were not aware of the drain on their physical bodies - they never made it. The entire Drensieqi nation collapsed into the dimension of Shadow. Autamma's magically accoutered Gryphon Guard was instrumental in turning the tide against the Darklord's forces.

Things came to a head when the Darkwall finally began to reach Keystone borders. The Keystone people fought valiantly but could not have succeeded had it not been for the second Jreasten exploration team, which managed to create another (albeit lesser) portal to bring their own war machines with them. But not even these two mighty forces were enough to combat the Darklord without the assistance of Wetzylbaum's nation, the Council of Wyrms. Knowing that he could not possibly counter such forces even with his tireless undead armies, the Darklord took to the defensive while in reality he was creating an offensive strike. He sent his armies deep into the Swamplands, to attack the Keystone Kingdom by surprise.

Unknown to the Darklord, Wetzylbaum had found the Creator scrolls which unleashed the genetic heritage in the Lithonian peoples, and used it. The Lithonians, far more intelligent and cunning than ever before, waylaid the skeleton armies of the Darklord, thus ensuring that his defeat was total. The Lithonian peoples used the fallen weapons and armor from their foes to begin rebuilding their own nation.

What was left of the Darklord's nation was obliterated by an intense solar flare from the Five Sisters, believed to be immature (and gigantic) versions of Welstar. The five stars literally burned the scourge of the Darklord off the planet, leaving all living beings unharmed.

No longer united by a common enemy, the other races fell to bickering. Xavier died during the Darkwar, and Wetzylbaum soon after, leaving the dragons and humans to rule themselves. The Sephrani discovered ships that had been long buried in the sands, and fled to the skies, leaving their Jalanoi brothers behind. One would think, that after so much fighting and war, the armies would be at peace.

But this was not to be. Along with their lost heritage, the Lithonians had their memories restored, and they knew what the elves had wrought upon them. Filled with hatred, the Lithonians pressed onward in attempt to destroy the Jalanoi.

Fearing what the Lithonian nation could do, and knowing the Sephrani people could not possibly fight the Lithonians, Claven, an avangion of great power, created his own genetic diversity by combining elven traits with birds and insects. Thus the Elkara and Apshai were born. Unknown to Claven, the Jalanoi in space were not unaffected, and they too, underwent a radical evolutionary change.

These changes halted the Lithonian advance, but created their own problems. Sun Wolf Zeb, originally a tribal leader, took one of the five elven Armadas and retaliated against all elves from the depths of space, claiming that for the death of the Apshai god (for he, like the other four, had fallen during the Darkwar) would only be placated by the death of every living elf. Seeing their transformation into half-insects as a curse rather than a blessing (as Laeron, the Captain of the Elven Fleet, saw it) his people began exacting terrible guerilla attacks upon all elves.

The elves themselves could not agree. The Apshai separated themselves from the other elves, claiming the sacred art of bladesinging was theirs alone, and slaughtering elves who practised the art. The Elkara, finding that the Lithonians could not reach them in their cold mountain climes, retreated to the mountain tops, leaving the Sephrani with more problems than they started with.

Keystone, left finally unmolested, grew into several principalities, including the city-states of Charthur and Bloodstone. The dwarven nation of New Jreast was formed at the same time. A minor barony, Charthur is still plagued by Uruk invasions.
